About Mount Bierstadt — Colorado Hiking Trail Guide

Mount Bierstadt is the quintessential Colorado fourteener for those climbing their first 14,000-foot peak. At 14,060 feet, it's one of the easier fourteeners to summit, with a well-defined trail and reasonable elevation gain — but it's still a serious mountain hike that demands respect and preparation. The reward is a panoramic 360-degree summit view that stretches across the entire Front Range and beyond.

The trail begins at Guanella Pass (elevation 11,669 feet) and immediately drops into an expansive valley filled with willows before beginning the long, steady climb up Bierstadt's west ridge. On clear summer mornings, the silhouette of the peak against a deep blue Colorado sky is genuinely awe-inspiring. You'll share the mountain with fellow peak-baggers and even technical climbers heading for the neighboring Sawtooth ridge.

Afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly above treeline in summer — this is not a metaphor. Lightning is the leading cause of backcountry fatalities in Colorado. Plan to be at the summit by 11am and descending well before early afternoon. The Guanella Pass area receives heavy snow and the road sometimes closes in winter, so check road conditions before making the drive.
