About Emerald Lake Trail — Colorado Hiking Trail Guide

The Emerald Lake Trail is one of the crown jewels of Rocky Mountain National Park, and for good reason. Starting from the Bear Lake Trailhead, you'll wind through fragrant pine and spruce forests before arriving at three stunning mountain lakes in quick succession — Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and finally Emerald Lake. Each stop is more spectacular than the last, and Emerald Lake itself sits in a dramatic cirque surrounded by towering peaks that reflect perfectly in the still, crystal-clear water.

This trail offers a remarkable amount of alpine beauty for its modest length. Even in midsummer, you'll often find patches of snow clinging to the shadowed cliffs above the lake. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in July and August, and the fall foliage in September makes the hike especially vivid. The trail is well-maintained with clear signage throughout.

Bear in mind that this is one of the most popular trails in the park, and parking at Bear Lake fills by 8am on summer weekends. The park strongly recommends using the free shuttle system from Estes Park or arriving very early. Despite the crowds, the scenery is worth every step — and you can always visit on a weekday or early morning in fall for a more peaceful experience.
