About Hanging Lake Trail — Colorado Hiking Trail Guide
Hanging Lake is widely considered one of the most beautiful and unique natural features in Colorado — and the hike to reach it lives up to that reputation. The trail ascends relentlessly from the floor of spectacular Glenwood Canyon, gaining over 1,000 feet in just 1.3 miles. It's short but genuinely steep, with rocky stairs and root-covered terrain that demands sure footing.
At the top, you're rewarded with a breathtaking sight: an impossibly clear turquoise lake perched on a natural rock shelf, fed by Bridal Veil Falls that cascade directly into the far end. Spouting Rock, a short climb above the lake, shoots a jet of water dramatically from a cliff face. The entire scene feels almost tropical — a lush, spring-fed oasis nestled in the red rock walls of the Colorado canyon country.
The lake is a National Natural Landmark and fragile ecosystem. Swimming and wading are strictly prohibited — even touching the water can disturb the delicate algae and aquatic moss that give the lake its color. Stay on the boardwalk around the lake.
